LARCHMONT VILLAGE—New York natives Robin and Stuart Goldblatt had something specific in mind when they started looking for a new home in Los Angeles. After six months of flying back and forth to view houses and neighborhoods, they learned what they truly wanted was nothing like they originally intended.

Rather than in the flats of West Hollywood in walking distance to shopping and public transportation (they are New Yorkers after all), they found themselves in the middle of an intricate bidding war for a celebrity-pedigreed home in tony Whitley Heights.

By the time the deal was signed, the Goldblatts were thankful they had realtor John Kostrey of The Kostrey Collection in their corner.

“John is incredibly knowledgeable and extremely calm,” said Robin Goldblatt. “It was a crazy and emotional process but he was very intuitive. I knew there were several people wanting this house and he just was on the money knowing what we should do.”

Kostrey comes to the fine art of negotiation naturally. A USC Law School trained attorney, he got his broker’s license for fun, doing part time real estate for friends.

Now, he said, real estate, allows him to combine two of his passions: making deals and appreciating architecture. When he’s not showing houses and smoothing transactions, he’s restoring his craftsman home in Country Club Park.

“We offer an extremely personalized level of service, whether preparing a property to sell or helping someone buy their first home. We get very involved,” he said.

Not only is Kostrey on hand to inform clients of every legality and consequence, his team, known as The Kostrey Collection, has a unique set of backgrounds, from creatives to numbers-crunching financial skills—everything needed for a successful transaction.

Take, for instance, a recent Culver City Kostrey listing that launched with a block party, complete with food truck catering and games for kids. The affair turned out 400 people and multiple offers for way over asking price.

“L.A. is a very competitive market,” said Kostrey. “We understand and know how to create value. That’s when our abilities shine.”
