[BETTER KNOW A BARTENDER] Rascal’s Dominique Anabalon

Dominique Anabalon

The Larchmont area is home to some of Los Angeles’s best bars and restaurants, but how well do you know the bartenders who help keep the party going?

This month, we sat down with Dominique Anabalon, server-bartender at Rascal on La Brea Avenue to discuss her career and favorite drinks.

Where are you from?

I grew up in Whittier, so L.A. County.

What brought you into the city?

My friends and more activity, I guess. Whittier’s more mellow and chill. More suburban with more old people. It’s super great, I have nothing negative to say about it, but I wanted a little more excitement.

How long have you been bartending?

Two years. We got really lucky. We used to be beer and wine, but then they got their liquor license so they sent us to bartending school. Actually, Sandy, our owner, taught us more than the bartending school.

Were you into bartending before?

This is my first place; when they hired me I didn’t have any bartending experience and none was needed, so it just fell into my lap. It wasn’t something I wasn’t actively pursuing and I hear from everyone that all the girls here were super lucky because it’s really hard to get a bartending job in L.A.

Did you have any interest in bartending before?

Well, I like drinking. Haha. Does that count? My friends and I would make drinks at parties, but there wasn’t anything I was looking for.

What is one of the funniest, weirdest or most interesting things you’ve seen on the job?

I’ve seen a couple break ups, and those are awful to watch. Oh, random people sometimes come off the street–people who aren’t eating here–and just make an announcement. I don’t know if they’re drunk, but they’ll just come in here and say something.

Announcements? Do they burst in like Kramer?

Kind of. It’s like people having a rough time. Recently, we had this woman come in as we were closing and she announced that she had recently read a magazine of adultery. That was the announcement. She wanted to share that she had read an “adulterous magazine.” A customer yelled at her to get out. It was so weird, she was speaking nonsense and a customer was like “Just get out of here” and she left. Adulterous magazine…I don’t even know what that means.

So, do you think the magazine about adultery or was itself adulterous?

Haha. The magazine is going around destroying marriages.

What is one of your favorite drinks, how do you make it and what do you like about it?

We have a brand new drink that I love called Peach Fuzz. It’s gin, lemon juice, white peach puree, a splash of Pellegrino and mint. It’s super refreshing, really light and easy to drink. I like drinks that are strong, but you can’t taste that it’s strong. I like how easy it is to sip on.

Peach Fuzz

2 oz Gin

1 oz Lemon Juice

2 oz White Peach Puree

1 splash Pellegrino

3 Mint Leaves

Shake with ice and strain into a tall glass.
